Homeschooling Prices - News

Questions and Answers

Homeschooling?!?!?!?!?

Hey guys. Ok here's the deal. I do not want to go to public school because of some issues I have that I'm not going to share but anyways I am looking for a cheap alternative school that will allow me to have my own schedule so that I am able to go to my horse during the day and not be tied to a specific schedule. I want to be able to do my work when I want. Any suggestions??

What is traditional homeschooling like?? Would that work??

I am the opposite of Anna. I don't know about online schooling, but can tell you about traditional homeschooling as well as a few correspondence/umbrella programs. First, research the homeschooling laws for your state to find out about reporting, record keeping, and any other requirements. Then, your parents would choose a program or curriculum that fits your needs, interests, and budget that you would study when and where you are able. Some states have mandatory amount of time spent on schooling each day or school year, but it doesn't have to be done just during traditional school hours. Prices range from free to thousands of dollars, but most spend a few hundred per child.

Some curriculum providers offer full programs with all subjects in a kit. A lot of these companies also offer record keeping service for an additional fee. (this may be referred to as an umbrella program or correspondence study instead of homeschool by some purists, but don’t worry about that) Examples of these companies include Christian Light Education, Sonlight, Abeka, Bob Jones, and Calvert. A lot of new homeschoolers will use one of these programs their first year as they get used to homeschooling and figure out their teaching and learning styles.

My friend has had good luck with Sonlight and continues to use the full program. Abeka and Calvert are closest to traditional school curriculum so don’t always work well for homeschool. I didn’t like Abeka because it was too scripted and bored my kids literally to tears.

There are also companies that specialize in just a single subject such as math, reading, or science. Most of the companies mentioned above also allow you to order just individual subjects rather than the full package, but you can’t be part of their record keeping program if you do. (Calvert is an exception. You must do the full package only with them.) This allows you to pick and choose among companies to custom design a program to fit your needs, interests, and budget. That is what I do. Rainbow Resource is a terrific homeschool supply store for getting books, workbooks, kits, and other materials.

Homeschooling parents: Looking for a reasonable priced online school?

Right Now I seem to be playing phone tag with the public online homeschool. I need to get something started. It seems that most of the online public schools in my area are waiting list only. Some arent taking new students till next fall. The current school my son is at isnt working. Can you recommend any online accredited schools? Ones that dont cost an arm and a leg. I need one till June.

Homeschooling has nothing what so ever to do with online school. They are completely different ways of learning.

True homeschooling is just that – School is at home. Teachers are the parents. The main reason to homeschool

is to get out of the traditional school system.

Real homeschooling you have full control over your education. You have the say in what you learn, how you

learn and when you learn it. You do not have to follow a set of lessons required from your local school. You

learn the way you want. You are self learning.

If you sign up to some free public school online learning thing then you are just following the same thing you were learning at school. No different from at all. You still have set rules and you are still in control of the state.

As for schools online you can look online to see what will work for your family.

Homeschooling………?

I am thinking about homeschooling my children I already have a 5 yr old who just started kindergarten in the public schools. I wasn't homschooled or anything but I don't feel my child/ren will get the appropriate one on one attention they need for a good learning experience.

My questions are:

Does it cost a lot to get started? Is there a lot of materials you have to buy?

How do you get started?

Can I teach my preschool aged children at the same time as teaching my kindergaten aged child?

Maybe its just that I feel nervous about the thought of homeschooling but any thing you can tell me about the subject would be much appreciated. Also any good websites would be great too.

Thanks.

Judging by some of the answers on the other questions from "trolls," I feel the need to warn you you may get a lot of nay sayers.

It does not cost a lot to get started. You can actually look into using the local library for a lot of your supplies. I really liked "Five in a Row" as a curriculum for kindergarten. There is a ton of curriculum out there though. The best prices I found in at a place called "Rock Solid." www.rocksolidinc.com

In Florida I simply wrote a letter of intent. You need to check the laws for your state though. Www.hslda.org is a good resource for that.

Yes, the preschoolers can listen in, it actually is great for them and they learn along side as well.

Everyone I believe is nervous at the time they start, its normal! Best advise I can give is read up on it. Your local library should have support books on Home schooling. That's where I started. Check for home school groups there and at local churches as well.

Remember that home schooling is a lifestyle, not just school at home. Check out some of my other answers or my 360 page (link in my profile) for a little of my story or email me if you would like.

Blessings!
