Homeschool Curriculum?

I live in Orange County of New, York. Specifically, in Newburgh. I am going to be home schooled and my mother has already sent in her letter of intent. I was going to start at the high school, but due to my mother's medical problems I had to be pulled out. The guidance counselor at the school said that we have to follow the school's curriculum, which she never said what it was called.

I went to homeschooling websites and people said you can pick any curriculum. Do we follow the school's curriculum or pick our own? Also, where would we get textbooks…preferably used and cheap?

No you do not need to follow the school's curricula. Homeschoolers are not public school students. Never ask the employee's of a public school about homeschooling. It is not a part of their job to know anything about it and unfortunately most will either make wild guesses or intentionally lie. Yes in general you can pick any curricula. The 2 things you need to take into consideration is whether the material complies with any laws you must follow and whether or not the material meets your needs (including future needs such as college admission requirement).

As for specific materials. In general I advise against standard textbooks. Typically textbooks are geared toward a traditional classroom setting. Instead you need to seek out materials written directly for homeschool use.

What is the best homeschool curriculum?

Looking for a complete homeschool curriculum for my first grader. Something with lesson plans. Easy to follow for a first time homeschooler. I'm thinking more formal. Thanks!

There really is no best, whether you're talking about Christian or secular. The one that's best is the one that works for your child. Sonlight is a good curriculum. If you're not big on the Christianity component, it's pretty easy to modify, However, it is language heavy and if your child is a visual learner it might not be a great fit. Math-U-See is more appropriate for some visual learners. However, it's heavy on hands-on and you might need to supplement with more paper & pencil work. Abeka is formal, but some find it rote and too heavy on drill.

If I were you, I would go through curriculum review sites, and read up on different curriculum and what users liked, and didn't about them. I particularly appreciate critical reviews, not because they're bashing the curriculum, and they might be, but because negative reviews point out the weaknesses in every curriculum. Every curriculum has positives and negatives, and no curriculum is the best or works for every student. Then I think, would the weaknesses stand in our way? There is the individual part. Well, there are two ways to answer this question. If you're asking what do you have to do to homeschool your children, go to the HSLDA website and review the laws in your state. Next, you'll need to identify your style (classical, Charlotte Mason, unschooling, eclectic). That will help with your curriculum choices, which is the next step – buy your curriculum (if you need to). Finally, start teaching.

I need help with finding a homeschool curriculum! I only need 13 units to graduate; help?

Right now i'm using some of the Alpha Omega booklets, not really a fan.

I was SUPPOSED to take the last 3 classes at my community college, but i'm too late for the registration :/

All i have left to take is Government, Economics and English.

Anyone know of a legitimate curriculum I can use that isn't too expensive?

ALSO! I'm trying to get all my credits done by the end of summer so i don't need a full years worrth of work.

Or make up your own. Curricula used by homeschoolers doesn't have to be made by someone else in order to be "legitimate." A number of homeschoolers design their own. If you have a public library nearby, you should be able to find a wide variety of books (not textbooks, but probably more interesting and written in more depth) on Government, Economics and various aspects of English. You can put together your own curriculum by reading a variety of books, writing reports on them or making some kind of project to show what you've learned and write up your own course description to show what your course included.

Books like "What About College? How homeschooling leads to admissions to the best colleges and universities" will give you great advice on writing up your own course descriptions and transcripts to show what you've learned during your course.

Homeschool Curriculum – non-religious – 11th grade?

So right now I'm doing school online. And it's not working out – we are having Internetproblems and I've had to go to the library and pay to use the computer or drive a ways to a family members house to use their computer – so I'm going back to regular Home Schooling.

I need a curriculum that is NOT Christian, or Catholic, or anything.

I'm a junior in High School – these are the classes I need (they can be from different curriculums as long as they are NOTTT religious).

Algebra 2

Chemistry

English 10/World Literature or American Literature

Social Studies 10/World History or World Studies

Pre-Calculus or something similar

Biology (Advanced, or for 10th grade)

*I know Biology comes before Chemistry. But I want Biology so I can review, I took it in 9th grade.

*I know Algebra 2 comes before Pre-Calculus, I'm taking them both. But I obviously won't start Pre-Calc until I finish Alg.2.

I have gotten books "for Christian families" and so has my friend that is homeschooled and we both had problems with them. They focus more on religion then actually learning the subject.

I'm not a Christian so it doesn't work for me.

I want to learn about the subjects I'd be taking in school, not religion and God. That's what church is for.

Even with the Christian Curriculum I had it was all religious, even the math and science. I figured that the english and history would be religious and whatnot, but even in the MATH (geometry) it's pretty much all they talked about…

And in science, it was about 50/50.

It's just frusterating.

My daughter does not use religious premise materials with her home schooling either, so don't worry about voicing exactly what you are looking for here ;-).

I'm not sure what your financial situation may be, but there is the option of ordering textbooks from publishers, as we do, or even searching for them and purchasing them through places like Ebay. For the past three years I have ordered books from McDougal-Littell and my daughter and I have both been very satisfied. There is a form that your parent(s) would need to fill out in order to purchase the Teacher's Editions, but it is very simple to do and well worth it.

Check out FLVS.net it is Florida Virtual School and has real classes for students in homeschool programs or students in regular high school/middle school just looking for extra credits. I take eight classes with them online and then I go to my college campus to take three clases there through dual enrollment. FLVS is free to all florida residents. But if your not in Florida you can still take classes wih them. It is a great progam. The classes are harder than regular high school classes because you are expected to know the information and teachers call parents once a month to discuss the students progress in the course. Your expect to do anywhere around 3 to 5 assignments a week, depending on the class your in. Also parents can access the students grades at anytime they would like to. Once students have completed the class they recieve their credit which is applied to their high school diploma, just like a regular school class. Also students are allowed 4 weeks to try the class out and if they decide it isn't for them they can drop the class without penalty and it wont go on their transcript. I'll say it again, it is a great program and top notch. They also have student clubs that students can join and participate in by traveling or going to competitions. Apologia is considered the best high school science curriculum. It is approached from a very strong Christian perspective, so if that's not what you want, avoid it.

You might check Cathy Duffy's website and book (100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum). The book reviews what she considers the best. Her website only mentions these, but doesn't go into detail (for that, of course, you have to buy the book), but does detail programs that DIDN'T make the book – worth a look, anyway.

Homeschooling has come a long way from 20 years ago. I homeschooled my second grader this year and we were not home all day long! The great thing about homeschooling in 2010 is there are many, many different choices on how to do it (it's almost overwhelming how many choices there are) For instance, we attend classes at two different homeschool co-ops so my son had classes two days a week. We also are part of a field trip group so we go on field trips once a month. We are also involved in our church so Sundays my son is in the youth choir and Wednesday nights he is involved in another program called AWANA that he absolutely loves. So for us, frankly, part of why we homeschooled was so we would have more family time together. He went to full time school in 1st grade and was gone from 8 am – 4 pm and then with church activities, swimming, etc I felt we hardly saw each other. I think it is ironic that the main question about home schooling is about socialization when many parents are trying to counteract the socialization their kids are getting at school!

One of our homeschool co-ops even has a graduation and a formal so if your student really wants to be a part of those aspects of public school, they can.

However, I personally do not think homeschooling is for everyone. It has to be an individual decision for each family because it does take commitment. I think these are the steps you would need to take to make an informed decision:

1. Each state has their own homeschooling laws. Therefore, you need to determine the requirements for your state (I am assuming you are in the U.S.) The Home School Legal Defense Assocation has the basic information for each state listed by state here: http://ift.tt/1jZiQ6C

This will also determine the requirements for how you would need to be supervised.

2. Determine what your motivation is for wanting to be homeschooled and your learning style. This will help you determine what path to take in homeschooling. For instance, you are realizing your God given gift is music and your high school has no music program because of recent tax cuts and you really feel you want to major in music in college. You would rather spend three hours a day getting your basic requirements out of the way so you could spend 2 hours practicing your music everyday. You are a visual learner and like computers. Therefore, you might choose an online curriculum because that would suit your learning style and help you complete your requirements.

3. Research what curriculum would suit your learning style, budget, family, etc. There are so many out there it can be overwhelming. I found Cathy Duffy's book "100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum" to be really helpful because she helps you determine your learning style and goes through her top picks for curriculum by category and learning style type. 4. Find what support groups and/or homeschool co-ops are in your area. You can type homeschool co-op and your state to narrow down which ones are closer to you. There are also many support groups online as well as ones that provide field trips, parent instruction, assessment tests, etc. In your area. Also, see if there is a state homeschool organization in your state because they will also have a lot of info. (In Washington it's called "WHO" Washington Homeschool Organization)

There are even many public schools that offer homeschool classes as well (here in Washington there is even homeschool "school" but if you take a certain number of classes through them there are more requirements) Also, I know some homeschooles who are high school age who choose to also be in Running Start which is basically free college classes you can complete in high school for free through the state of Washington. The possibilities are endless!

5. Read books about homeschooling. This really opened my eyes to the endless possibilities out there. There are so many different ways of homeschooling. 6. Attend homeschooling conferences or curriculum fairs. They seem to tend to be in the spring or the summer when everyone is choosing curriculum for the next year. This helped me to be able to see some different curriculums available up close. It can also be overwhelming so I think it's best to have done some research beforehand so you have an idea of what dire.

To be honest, I'm not into worksheets. They are busy work. Do something with your son that's enjoyable, play some games, measure out ingredients to bake or cook, etc. He's only six.

My granddaughter was kicked out of school at the end of her 7th grade year last year, another stupid thing with Galatia schools. Never put your kids in the schools here, they aren't worth a penny. Well, anyway. I have decided to homeschool her. I need help finding cheap homeschooling books and stuff. Cheap, as cheap as possible. Help please!

Old Fashioned Education has links to a lot of free or nearly free printable curriculum. I would suggest trying there first and then deciding which subjects you want to purchase. You may need to go down a grade level or two for some subjects, because a lot of homeschool curriculum teaches concepts at least a semester, if not a full year before public schools.

The Life of Fred math series is inexpensive and fun. The website has sample pages to help decide which level she needs, but you get a better deal by purchasing from Rainbow Resource Center. Some children need a little extra practice over certain concepts, so you can print free worksheets from Math U See.

Christian Liberty Press has a reasonably priced 7th grade Science.

Everyday spelling is available online, so need to purchase.

Pathway Readers and Climbing to Good English are both inexpensive. I know of a number of homeschoolers who either have used Pathway Readers or simply have them in their homes as storybooks. Sample pages are available at http://ift.tt/1iq9V8S;

For History, I would suggest going to the Sonlight website and looking at which books are part of either the 6th or 7th grade History program. Take the list of books to the local public library and borrow the ones that you can. Sonlight is a literature-based program and most children tend to get more out of history through reading interesting books rather than boring history textbooks, plus most public libraries have a number of the required books.

Homeschool disaster help?

I transferred schools from New Hampshire to Massachusetts. At my old school it was 4 classes that were semester long 90 mins a day then the next semester you start another new 4 classes. At the new school there classes are year long 50 mins a day and I got transferred right after I finished my first semester! So I couldnt start the classes I was supposed to get at my old school because at the new school they are already half way done, so they gave me only 1 class that I was origininally supposed to get, English 10. But they did not give me the Geometry honors and Spanish 3 because they figured it'd be to hard to catch up in, which of course it would. I would feel much more comfortable starting english 10 from the beginning as well. So I decided to go to homeschooling to take these 3 classes at my own pace and own style. But I'm broke as shit. I guess the home school person said we had the option to borrow text books from the school, which is great! But when I get the text books, what do I do next???? I don't want to just get stuck doing stupid book work for a couple months and consider that "finishing the subjects" In Massachusetts they need proof so I need to assemble tests and score well on them. I need worksheets and stuff as well. In regular school you don't end up ever doing every chapter in the textbooks, you end up doing like 10 of them but skipping around, not in a row. So I was gonna see if I could just get an outline of what to do in each class from the school. I mean, I have internet to help with Spanish to look up pronunciation, I'm usually good at it anyways. But my parent does not know spanish at all nor any of the other stuff. Plus, what about English 10??? English never used a textbook anyways, so what do I do? No money, this is bullshittt. P.S if I had stayed in school I would be behind in math, and I don't want to get stuck doing extra work junior and senior year just because of it, that's why I chose this. Helppp!

For English, you may want to check out Ambleside Online. It's a free online curriculum guide for all subjects using mostly library books. http://ift.tt/1iq9T0F; Check out what they recommend for grade 10. It may help with your other subjects as well.

Without the answers and teacher guides to do tests, you will have a hard time just with the textbooks. You can try to find lesson plans for the books online. Search the book title and lesson plan. Or look for topic guides to go along with the chapter.

Well, I already suggested Math-U-See to you for geometry. Yes, it will cost about $85, unless you can find used copy, especially the instructor pack.

Check into Apologia for your science. A lot of homeschool families use it. There are often cheap copies available used online. I got their biology for just $10.

Have you looked into summer school? That may be a good way to get caught up. Plus, there is no guarentee the school will accept the work you do homeschooled anyway.

What is a good english curriculum who is a junior, and is homeschooled?

Ok, so I used write with the best for three years straight, I loved it. Since I did something that covered english and literature, my mom didn't get an english program for this school year. And I have noticed my grammar is not as top-notch as it used to be, can anyone recommend a good program?

Learning Language Arts Through Literature is a good program that covers writing, grammar, spelling, and all other "English" topics. It is in workbook form, and doesn't cost too much.

I am going to homeschool my 2 daughters who will be in 4th and 6th grade next yr. I am seeing so many different curriculums out here its overwhelming. I mostly need an English and math curriculum. NY state only cares about those test scores. The rest I can pretty much do on my own with fun projects and workshops in our area. I'd like to find a good language arts, spelling, writing etc. Curriculum. Something that allows me to do like an all-in-one thing or combo teaching.

Depends on how your kids learn.

I have one aural learner who is a tiny engineer…extremely left-brained, logical, analytical, strategic. If the information doesn't come through his ears, forget it, it's not going to get absorbed.

I have one visual learner who is a tiny artist…very right-brained, athletic, adores acting, painting, coloring. She loves color, motion and music. If it doesn't catch her eye, forget it.

So we have basic, K-level geography. How many continents are there? What are they called? Where are they? Within those continents are countries; learn a bit about each. So my engineer does great with anything on the computer. I find a free geography game, he has to complete placing the named continents on a map five or six times every morning. The computer speaks to him as he clicks on the continents and moves them. I have a song on CD, I play the stupid thing All. The. Time. Especially in the car. It sticks in his head, has the names of the continents on it. He does fine with that.

My little artist is bored beyond belief by the computer program…the music is great, but she can't "see" the map in her head, it has to be in front of her. Here we have to get an inflatable globe and I put a sticker on a continent, then throw it to her. She has to catch the "ball" and tell me what continent the sticker is on. Then she can move the sticker and toss it to me, and I have to name the continent. Back and forth we go. That works pretty well.

Countries in Europe: Aural learner is happy to listen to the story, can answer the questions, we're done. Read the same thing to my Visual learner and it's like she never heard a word you said. She looks at you blankly. Huh? Then I learned to show her how to scrapbook the European countries. Here's the cover of the book we read, Ferdinand the Bull. Let's make it into a mini book using construction paper, and we'll write the reasons Ferdinand wouldn't fight on these little, white, flower-shaped pieces of paper. My son would rather stick hot needles in his eyes than do this, but the little artist thinks this is GREAT, when Daddy comes home she's bubbling over, telling him that "I got to do INTERESTING school today!" (BTW, that's called "Notebooking" or "Lapbooking," in case you care.)

Knowing your kiddo's learning type will go a long way toward finding The Best Homeschool Curriculum. And just b/c it's the best for one doesn't mean it's the best for both. Siblings can be quite different.

I tend to use the scope and sequence as a spine, but modify heavily depending on who's getting the lesson.

I homeschool my son (2nd grade) and last year money was very tight. We looked on Ebay and found parts of a curriculum (math) and got those very cheap from there. We also used edhelper.com A full year membersihp there is only about $25.

An invaluable resource I found at Amazon.com is a book called Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School *see link below to the book @ amazon*. It tells you what you should know at each grade level, with web addresses (some are outdated), and books that are easily found via your public library.

I don't know where you're from, but each state has its own homeschool laws. Some states, like mine, allow you to create your own curriculum, where others insist that you use an accreddited umbrella school. If yours will let you create your own, its not difficult to do at all.

How about letting her be 2, huh?

Let her do what she wants because that's how she's learning. And she is learning volumes – a complete language, and what it means; how to dress herself; how to feed herself and how to fit into society with all its rules.

Give her to tools (blocks, FP letters, creative toys, coloring books, etc) and stay out of her way. She has a natural desire to learn. Formal learning, i.e. 'school' takes that away from her by standardizing it for all children, not her.

There will be plenty of time for book learning. Wait.

Are there any FREE preschool curriculum websites?

I'm in need of a FREE or little to no cost preschool curriculum website; where I can download the essentials for my soon to be 4 year old son. He's not in school yet but there is no reason why he should not prepare for it. When I go to work during the day he is left with his Grandmother who I will often leave worksheets with for him to complete by time I arrive home from work. In addition to the books and educational videos that he will watch sometimes.

I will be entering 9th grade this next semester. I have been homeschooled all my life and will continue to be. I am planning on using the Apologia Science textbooks for science. For english I will just be studying on my own and will take the AP English test. For history I will first just study overall world history on my own. I might find an event or time period I am really interested in and will make a research report on it. For my later years in highschool I will be studying American history on my own so that I can take the American History AP. For math I am still not quite sure what I will do. Also during highschool I will be taking classes at my local community college. Classes for highschoolers are free, and they count for both highschool and college credits. You should check out your local community college and see if it has a similar program.

I know I am not covering all the subjects, but this will give you a general idea of my highschool plan is like. As you can see I am not using any particular curriculum. I am just picking and choosing the different things that will work best for me. But if you really want to have a whole complete curriculum, or just have no idea what is out there for you to use, here is a site that might help.

We don't use any specific homeschool curriculum–it's a mish mash of different things. I don't even have a specific curriculum for certain subjects.

As for schedule, it's like this:

Up around 7.

Have breakfast, get dressed and all that. Maybe have a bit of story time.

Get working by 8:30. Work can include: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, art, etc.

Break for lunch.

Our afternoons are never the same: we're out at least once a week, often 3 times. When we are home, we might do some schooly stuff, or they may just have free time to play outside or play games or help me bake something…

My kids are only 6 and 9. I doubt this'll be the same routine in 3 years time!

Has anyone use Abeka dvd curriculum? What is your opinion on it?

This is our 3rd year homeschooling. She is going into 5th grade now. So far I have used several different curriculum and I would like to use one and keep it.

If you have used Abeka dvd curriculum please give me your opinion and the pluses and minuses.

I have homeschooled for many years. Here are some considerations:

1. Why do you want to switch to a DVD program? Are you tired of interacting with her? Why not place her in a Christian school that uses Abeka? At least she would have a living person interacting with her, and not stare into a screen all day.

2. DVD programs are new and exciting at first, during the first part of the school year. Of my 4 friends who were avid Abeka DVD school users, all of them told me that their children tuned out the "teacher" about halfway through the end of the year. Other kids complained that the lessons were too long, repetitious, they "already know it so why must I watch it?" You know, all the reasons we homeschool our kids rather than have them go to school…

3. Pluses: The teachers on the DVD do not get burned out, busy, have infants to feed, ect. They are always there and are very thorough. I liked the 5th grade teacher's cheeriness. I don't always have that sense of joy over prepositions.

4. More Pluses: The Abeka curriculum itself has produced two generations of well-educated children and it does not have major "holes" in it, itself. It is workbook-y, that is, the lessons are not based on "living" or "real" books or "original sources" but instead are excerpts from books, or textbooks, with accompanying workbooks. Some kids learn very well this way, others tune out textbook stories and have a stronger preference for hands-on learning, writing about their learning, or using biographies/literature to learn.

(I was educated with Abeka and my eldest child attended a Christian school this past year that used Abeka, so you could say that I am familiar with it, and I ahve also watched many of the DVDs as my husband and I struggled to decide what was the best route for our kid).

5. Abeka DVDs are also cheaper than a private school.

BUT….have you asked your daughter her preference? If you don't have the time to sit down with her and work out all the schoolwork with her all day, (and I don't either, so I'm not getting all self-righteous on you) have you thought about another curriculum where she just independently studies and you "guide" her as needed? (Think ACE, LifePacs, and even Apologia or Emma Serl's English or Writing Strands – they are intended for self-study)

You do not need to use ALL of any one curriculum for your daughter! You might think "Math is NOT my thing – I will use the Abeka DVDs for that subject" but teach her English and writing. That is totally OK. And it provides balance, and it won't give her a TV headache or a backache from sitting all day watching a screen (been there, done that).

I hope that I gave you a thorough answer. What really turned me off were the HomeschoolReviews.com reviews of the DVDs. Once I read about 40 negative reviews I realized that it was not for us. I suggest you try going there and looking at what people have to say. Also, try looking into some of the other curriculum intended for busy moms and dads out there – there are so many options now. HELP!! I have decided to be home schooled and need help finding a curriculum that offers a diploma?

I have decided to be home schooled i am in 12th grade and need to find a good curriculium, online program or something that will offer me or give me a dipolma(hopefully accredidted) when i finish this said program. I am very confused and would like some advice or good suggestions.

Hopefully something that doesn't cost to much!

I also wanted to let you know – your curriculum doesn't have to give you your diploma for it to be legit. Your parents can sign your diploma and transcript, and it's perfectly fine. A parent-signed diploma and transcript is accepted by everyone from the local community college to Harvard or Berkeley.

There are plenty of good curricula out there that will keep your records and give you the diploma, but it's really not necessary as far as colleges or the military are concerned. This is basically to save you or your parents the record-keeping. Accreditation is mainly for if you're planning on going back into public school after your homeschooling year (which you're obviously not) – accreditation makes it more likely that the public school will accept your homeschooling credits.

Every college or university in America accepts homeschool transcripts and diplomas (accredited or not), as long as they are complete and accurate. It is fully legit for you to pull your own curriculum together, make a course outline with your parents, and graduate with it. To this end, here are some curriculum options you may want to look into:

English/Writing/Language Arts:

Can you help me with a Homeschool Curriculum?

Okay, I'm in 11th grade and I live in South Carolina. My mom may be homeschooling me my last two years. Where to get a curriculum and books?

I've got most of my credits already. All I need now is:

1 English Credit

US History II

1 Gov't & Econ. Class (1/2 credit each)

1 Science Credit (Chemistry)

and 2 Math Credits.

Im currently living in South Korea

so im wondering if i can get homeschooled in korea..

But the english type of homeschool.

Idk if that makes sense.

I don't know much about k-12. But I have had 11 years experience with SOS.

It's a great curriculum. There are currently three options with SOS.

SOS home-an independent homeschool CD based curriculum.

Your parents purchase the curriculum and you work independently of a school. You are responsible for maintaining all your school records and grades. The program automatically grades 90% of the work you do. Your parents are responsible to assign grades for projects and essay questions (the answer key tells your parents what to look for. With this option you are actually enrolled in a school. You submit your work to actual teachers who grade the work that the program does not automatically grade. When you complete the graduation requirements the Academy will issue high school transcripts and a diploma.

Cost approx $1780/year Grades 1-12

A fourth AOP option is LifePacs. This is AOP's non-computer homeschool option.

It uses LifePacs, work-text options. Each core subject contains 10 unit that contain the lessons, quizzes and unit tests for the subjects purchased. Like SOS, you are responsible for grading all work, maintaining all records, creating your transcripts and getting your own diploma. It's the most economical option from Alpha Omega.

If you choose to go the independent route do not feel daunted by the transcripts and the diploma. These are easily remedied. Remember SOS and Monarch maintains all records for you, so all you need to do is give your homeschool a name (many families get real creative and others just use their last name, street name or other identifiable name and add Academy e.g Lee Family HomeSchool) enter all your grades into a transcript template, print the transcript and you have an acceptable high school transcript. Anyone know of a good complete curriculum that encompasses history, reading, and english? For grade 10. I know of sonlight but it is quite costly. Any other options besides creating your own?

What is the fastest, simplest homeschool curriculum?

I need a curriculum for my daughter for the 11th grade. She is doing school over the summer, and I want a fast, simple, straight-forward curriculum for her. Something that will deliver the basic-facts information she needs without unnecessary gimmicks, and extra work. Any complete curriculum's you suggest, or specific books that are good?

She is taking these classes:

Algebra II

American Government and Economics

Chemistry

Looking for an Australian homeschool curriculum?

I want to homeschool my 3 girls aged 4(has learning difficulties due to sleep apnoea), 5(has a speech impediment) and 6(way beyond her peers at school) but being that I have never done it before I would really like to buy a boxed curriculum for at least the first year so I don't overwhelm myself. I would really like something with Australian spelling and not overly religious but I would also like to get a complete curriculum for the year without having to spend hours searching through every nook on the internet to find a maths program here and science one there etc. But on the other side of the coin I really don't have a large amount of money to throw around on a curriculum so any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I really do feel like I'm in way over my head here lol

Dame I have no idea how to respond to you other than this. Your points while I'm sure are valid in certain circumstances are not always the norm. My 6yo is in school at present, even though we did our own version of kindergarten last year because we lived too far from any school, and by the end of the year she was reading, writing and doing basic arithmetic. Now I never said she was gifted just way beyond her peers and she has been kept at the same level as her class mates where she is bored out of her brain doing things she already knows and getting in trouble because her boredom leads her to get theatrical.

My 5 yo, who is actually my step daughter, has speech therapy at her kindy, but instead of being with a a trained speech therapist it is 15 minutes Monday and Wednesday with a volunteer who is given print outs readily accessible on the internet, most of which I actually used last year while working through my then 3yo's speech impediment, who by the way speaks quite clearly now.

Oh I almost forgot

Funnily enough I'm not a teacher, but I did hold a cert III in Children's Services and worked in the infants room at our local child care centre before my eldest was born and although I loved the job I could not justify handing my own children over for someone else to raise while I am more than capable just for the few extra dollars it would bring in when we do just fine on one income.

I would also like to thank those that answered with links because I have no idea who linked it but at some point today while looking through them I stumbled upon WinterPromise which I know we will all love and for a complete package plus all the amazing added extras comes in just shy of our $800 budget for this year.

Hmm, my family are lifelong home-educators but we're natural learners (aka unschoolers) so don't use a curriculum and never have done so; hence I don't really have that much to say that might help, I'm afraid.

As you've no doubt found, there seems to be heaps of resources, organised by subject and age, available online for you to take and tie together to form your own curriculum but little in the way of 'all in one' curriculums. Possibly, I reckon, because curricula are more the domain of distance education and Australia maintains a far greater degree of separation between DE and home-educators than, say, Americans seem to do.

The rest all seem to be US-based and US-centric in attitude and content.

The only other thing I could suggest is you take a look at UK-based curricula; spelling etc is pretty much the same as is history etc (prior to 1788); actually, the english syllabii seem to include a fair amount of info on Australia and failing that you could always just 'parachute in' Aussie specific material. There was one Aussie mum here (don't know if she's still around) who used the American curriculum in classical education and simply dumped the irrelevant bits such as the American constitution and pledge of allegiance.

Or you could just go to one of the Board of Studies'/ Dept of Education websites and download their essential learning standards, learning objectives, curricula etc and then base your teaching on what is going on in schools.

Homeschool teen graduates college at 15

A teen who was homeschooled by his parents has graduated college at same time many students are finishing their freshman year in high school. Did homeschooling offer an edge?
