The free online programs (like K12, Insight, and Connections Academy) are correspondence programs run by public schools so they are different in each state. The ones you pay for are run by private schools. American High School is one of these type of programs. You follow their rules, curriculum, and schedule. There is very little control over your education other than picking classes. They are like regular school only done on a computer instead of in a classroom. Usually you are considered enrolled in the sponsoring school instead of homeschooled.

Traditional homeschooling is independent of a program. You would follow your state homeschooling laws. You pick your own curriculum and can use anything you want which you decide fits your needs, interests, learning style, and budget instead of the all-for-one curriculum in schools and programs. This can be an all-in-one kit from the same company (like Sonlight, Abeka, etc) or a mix of different companies. Your parents are in charge of your education instead of a school.

A very good program, well the best out there, is Abeka.

The website is www.abeka.org. It's basically $1000.00 a year, but that includes all the books and also the videos that you use. You have to send back the videos though.

I've used this curriculum since 6th grade, and it really prepares the students for college. The academics of this program are much higher than that of public schools.

For the video program, the student has to watch a video-taped class for each different subject, and then they are given a homework assignment for each night. Then there are tests every 3 weeks in every class, and exams every 9 weeks. There are also many quizzes to keep up with the learning and what they are supposed to know. There are two different video programs: the first one is where you send the tests to the Abeka office, and they keep the grades for you; the second one is where you keep the scores by yourself. It isn't hard at all, and it is very self-explanatory. The Abeka office also has many people you can call and ask for help from.

I really do believe that Abeka is worth the money!!

Free online homeschool programs do not exist. The "free" K12 programs are online public schools. They are not free, they are paid for by the same tax funds that pay for other public schools. Private online schools that accept homeschoolers could not stay in business if they gave away their services.
