Average Cost of Homeschooling - News

How much money does homeschooling cost in Canada?
Posted by Emily

The average cost of homeschooling is $400 to $600 for one child for one school year. That is the cost for traditional homeschooling, not online schooling. But you can actually do it for less than that amount. There are many ways to save money. For example, you can take advantage of all that your local library has to offer. You can check out classic books, books on history and science, books on cd, educational movies, etc. There are also tons! Of free resources for homeschooling on the internet. In addition, you can buy used books or borrow/trade books with other homeschoolers.

Does homeschooling cost anything?

I live in NC and currently go to public school…just wondering if it's costly.

I once saw a survey that claimed that the average homeschooling family pays between $200 and $400 a year per child to homeschool. This would mean the cost of curriculum and other materials. Since it is an average, some homeschoolers pay much more (buying full packages of curriculum from private schools that provide school records and other services) and some pay much less (using materials from the public library and/or used books and materials).

On the other hand, you'll save on some costs that you have to pay with some public schools:

Homeschoolers don't have to drive to and from school, buy school uniforms, buy clothes that are stylish enough to fit in with the other kids, buy school lunches, buy specific school supplies as designated by the school, etc. Homeschoolers can stay home, eat left-overs or home-cooked meals, buy whichever school supplies are on sale, etc. They don't have to participate in fundraisers.

There is a cost to homeschooling, but it doesn't have to be much. Especially if you are careful. You might want to check out the book "Homeschooling on a Shoe String."

Good luck.
