Which homeschool curriculum is best suited for me?

I am a stay home mother that also works from home and 1 day a week in the office . I plan on homeschooling my 4 yr old but I am looking for a curricula that doesnt require me to do too much time planning for lessons and is flexible. I've ben looking at oak meadow , k12 and others. Can anyone recommend some that would fit my needs and please also leave your review of what materials you use

maybe i should have made myself more clear. I plan on homeschooling my son when he reaches about 5-5 1/2. As of now he's learning things without a curriculum.

But realistically, a four-year-old doesn't need much of a curriculum. Get a cheap phonics workbook from a local discount store. Watch fun educational videos or DVDs such as the LeapFrog series (for teaching phonics and reading skills) or "Between the Lions" (for more advanced reading skills) or the "Magic School Bus" series (for science). And read to her a lot. Get a library card and go to the library often for story times and to check out books. Read to her stories, history and science books, books about careers and places around the world, books about animals and nature, and so on. Plant some seeds and watch them grow. Take nature walks and explore when possible. Let her paint, color, cut and paste, play with clay, string beads, etc.–she'll not only have fun but will likely build the fine motor skills needed for learning to write.

She'll learn more and have more fun with such things than with a standard sit-down curriculum that most 4-yr.-olds aren't ready for anyway.

I am interested in SonLight for history and reading, but am open to anything worthy of our time.

We use "The Well-Trained Mind" as our framework because the outline it gives seems very academically sound, going into subjects in an orderly fashion but in great depth–rather than skimming only along the surface of subjects.

We use their plan with a lot of library books for science since the science textbooks I've seen for the elementary levels have very little information in them and are boring. The library's nonfiction section has lots of science books that go into more depth and are more interesting. And the kids are learning so much from them.

For grammar, we've been using First Language Lessons, which gives a solid grounding in grammar. The lessons don't take a lot of time and don't involve a lot of busy work.

For math, we're using Saxon Math. A lot of homeschoolers love it. We switched to it when I realized that the kids weren't able to progress as they should because they didn't have a firm foundation in the basic math facts. I like also that Saxon Math doesn't let them forget lessons they studied a few weeks ago, as it keeps throwing review problems in.

For social studies, we have, in the past, gone through "The Story of the World" for world history which my kids loved so much that we went through it faster than recommended–and I plan to re-use that series again next year; this time using the activity books with the stories, too. This year we did American history and state history using a variety of books from the library. We started with "The History of US" by Joy Hakim which a lot of homeschoolers like, but it has so many volumes in the series and they get into way too much detail for elementary students, so we quit using it and went to a hodge podge of library books instead.

We've also used the library a lot for books on art and music. (We read about a number of composers and artists as well as learning some art techniques.)

For reading, we read. Lots and lots of books.

Cheap homeschool programs?

I'm hoping to be home schooled after spring break. But I was wondering if anyone knew a good low costing home school program for high school? Something around $80 a month would be great. If it cost more, please go ahead and post it anyway.

Is homeschooling & on-line school economically better for the U.S.?

It would eliminate the cost of bussing and the cost of school nutrition programs ….both very costly! There are many other cost effective arguments.

It would also help to eliminate many societal problems with teenagers.

It might help economically, but the majority of home schooling parents are not qualified to teach. If home schooling became the way of the future, I would predict a much lower level of quality education for American children.

Also, if someone is home schooled, then their only source of reference is their parents that teach them. Where as, in a public school, children are taught by dozens of teachers. They are able to gain insights into dozens of different perspectives. All adding up to better critical thinking skills, and a better understanding of our world.

How much would it cost to get homeschooled??

I'm going Into grade 10 this year but I wanted to get homeschooled in grade 11 and 12 because I hate the pace they go at in public school so

I talked to my sister whose gone through Uni and everything but she never had any experience with homeschooling and she said she had no idea how much it would cost. So for those who have experienced it

how much would it cost to have your parents teach you while following the curriculum and how much would it cost to get a private teacher??? I live in Ontario Canada btw thnxs.

It costs as much or as little as you & the people around you want to spend. In general, the more imaginative and resourceful you are, the more inexpensive it's likely to be.

If you were to get a private teacher (which is wholly unnecessary, btw) it would easily cost you thousands of dollars, whereas my parents homeschool me & my siblings very succesfully for approx. $50 per kid per year.

Help finding homeschool?

I was in public school first semester so starting second semester i wanted to start homeschool. Does anyone know any good homeschools that dont cost to much and you can start in the middle of the year? I need to be able to start in the middle of the coursee too cause i would have done all of first semester for nothing.

I am doing a homeschool group. I can't tell what grade you are in but the group is diverse in grades and ages of the students. I live in downtown Decatur and we meet in my apartment. I help students do what ever curriculum their parents choose, and I can help with that. We meet from Monday – Friday, 8:30 – 2:30. There will be about nine students in the group. The group is on-going, meaning we have started this week and will continue on next year. I am a certified teacher in the State of Georgia and have been teaching for eighteen years. If you would like more information feel free to call or write. The group costs $100 per week ($20 per day but students must pay by the week or by the month).

The Home schooling cost depends on the curriculum you use or the online school you choose. Below is a web site that offers you several different options. You will be able to research the cost out when you visit the link sites on this web site. If, you choose to use home school materials the cost may be between $300 to $500 a year. It has been a couple of year since I had to order material for students that I was helping as a teacher, so I am not sure of the costs now. Where can I find a reputable online high school program for my homeschooling son? One that is affordable, also

I am trying to look ahead my son is in the 7th grade this year. We do not have the connections academy in our state. I would like a high school program that is delivered through the internet, either through computer interaction that he can get credit for and graduate with a high school diploma.

My son has no problem with social situations that is just ignorance talking, he is active in football, scouts, and many more things that keep us in constant contact with the social element. By homeschooling him ,I am giving him an advantage that many others do not have. He is ahead of other kids his age, and is looking forward to graduating early so he can start on college and pursue his dream. I would not call that socailly inept.

Affordable is subjective, but most online programs aren't homeschooling. The free ones are public schools, and the expensive ones are private schools. That's why you pretty much don't find low-cost online programs– running a school is expensive and if someone wants to make a profit it's going to be pretty up there.

You don't need one, you know– I personally find them terribly tedious and counter-productive to the reasons I want to homeschool (better, more involved and hands-on education, free from standardized institutional methods & curricula).

Just not sure if you're aware, but traditionally homeschooling is done without online programs.

What is the most affordable online home schooling website?

How do I know I'm home-schooling my preschooler the best way possible?

After calling around to some of the preschools in our area, I have decided to try home schooling to prep my son for kindergarten. Although I would honestly prefer to have him in a real school environment, it is unfortunately NOT an option for our family.

My question now is: How do I find the "best" at-home preschool kit and curriculum? Is there some place that these programs are rated by professionals and parents? They all have testimonials on their web pages, but I'd rather have some non-biased opinions and ratings.

You know, I believe your son will really learn *a lot* more by being at home with you, rather than in a "real" school environment. You can teach him better than anyone else because you know him better than anyone else…………he is YOUR child. It will be one-on-one instruction – you can't beat that! And you can make it fun and hands-on for him! : )

If you find that you enjoy teaching him for preschool, you might want to consider continuing and homeschool him all the way to graduation.

Looking for a well-rated online christian homeschool curriculum.?

For my 9yr old who's in 4th grade. So, I'm looking for an online curriculum for a to-be 5th grader. Around maybe $1500 or less yearly. Any positive suggestions? Thanks!!!

Selecting a Christian education. A couple of things come to mind. First is that most Christians are more comfortable with their own church than they might be with others, so it's not always a one size fits all affair for everyone. Second would be: If you have a church you attend, talk to it's leadership. I'm sure they are either aware of programs they could recommend, or ask and find out for you. If you do not attend a church, go to one you are comfortable with to ask about it, even if you do not attend.

Also talk to your local School Board to find out everything you need to know about home schooling… Requirements for your County and State. They probably have useful information packets they could give you, and could tell you if the curriculum you would like to work with meets state guidelines. No point in buying into a program which doesn't meet their requirements, and fairly easy to check with them.

How can I fund private homeschool?

I have an exceptional child who doesn't fit teh mold of brik and morder school. I've been told to try private homeschool, where she can be excelerated at her own rate. She gets all a's and scored a perfect on il's standardized test. Perfect in math and exceeds expectations in everythign else. But they won't put her in excelerated classes because they say she isn't motivated. She is bored even her teachers say whe is very elevated and would benifit from private virtual school.

So how do I come up with 7,000 to 10,000 a year for schooling?

She has been accepted to several university programs but doesn't qualify for a pell grant becasue she is a middle school student.

Are there tax exemptions? Grants? Groups that help? Federal Funds?

It’s possible to home-school for practically free using only library materials, but generally you’ll want to spend a little money. You can make your own curriculum. My advice for saving money is:

1. Check out the laws for your state on the Home School Legal Defense Association website, so you can find out if the government will have any requirements for you. If so, it’s extremely important to follow them exactly, because some people who haven’t have lost custody of their children or been threatened with it. If registration with the state is optional, do NOT do it, because it can invite interference.

2. Ask your clergyman if the church can help you in any way, such as giving you used books, offering Bible study, etc.

3. Have your own computer, printer, & internet connection, if you don’t already. (In financial straits, you could get by fine with no internet connection after getting started.) This makes it easy to find information, free downloadable materials, free worksheets to print out, inexpensive used books to order if you decide to order any.

4. Take advantage of many things offered at the library. Any book you won’t need very long, you should check out from it rather than buy. There are also educational computer programs there, classical CDs for music appreciation, often classes for arts & crafts, some even have programs especially for the home-schooled. Library used-book sales are good places especially to find reference books, such as atlases & encyclopedias, inexpensively.

5. The 2 best websites to find free downloadable e-books are Google Books (pick Free Google E-Books) & Internet Archive (pick Text). Just search for the subject you need in either & you’ll find dozens to 100s of books.

6. There is a free geography-quiz computer program, Seterra, which is fun, & a free website, Khan Academy, which has tutorials & quizzing in every kind of math or science you can imagine, also finance, history, & SAT-prep. Both of these are immensely helpful.

7. The most education a child can get in the shortest time in reading literature is in classics. Book lists are John Senior’s Good Books list & a comprehensive list called Great Books and Classics, both on the internet. I recommend staying away from the modernist & post-modernist books (Marx, Nietschze, Dewey, & most of those published since the end of the 19th c.) because they tend to confuse & disturb children.

8. If you can afford to buy a few schoolbooks, the most value you can get is in reprints of the Blue-Backed Speller, the New England Primer (both from the Patriotic Textbook Series), a traditional arithmetic set such as Ray’s Arithmetic, & a traditional reading set, such as McGuffey or Sanders Readers. The 1st 2 go from the alphabet to 8th gr., with moral lessons, prayers, etc. The arithmetic goes from counting to calculating compound interest & extracting cube roots in 4 books. The reading books go from a 1st-gr. Alphabet primer to the 5th Reader which is generally college to grad. Sch. Level. You can get all these for less than you’d spend for many curriculum packages for only 1 yr. Still, these can be found on the sites in #5. Add a Bible, handwriting worksheets to trace, a Latin primer, a grammar primer, & a logic primer, (all free to download also if you like) & you’d have a 1st-rate K–8 curriculum, something better than almost any private school in the world uses.

9. If you need some more structure than this, try the book, The Latin-Centered Curriculum & the site “Classical Christian Homeschooling: Classical Education at Home,” but you may want to do some substituting of items to save more money.
