What are the names of Homeschools that you have used?

I am wanting to homeschool my child and need names of those that do the actual grading.

I think you want the names of "umbrella schools" or "private schools with a homeschooling option" or "correspondence schools" or "online schools."

Homeschools would be people's private homes that have an educational program going on within. Some people do name their homeschools, meaning they give a name to the educational program that they are running in their home–usually to simplify matters on official forms that ask for a school name, or to give a name to strangers who ask the children for the name of their school.

We don't use schools that do grading for us. We do our own homeschooling.

Online schooling? Home schooling?

Im doing a little research for a friends kids and I was wondering what would be best. Home school or online school? We are thinking 8-12th grade. The public schools are just not cutting it for the kids. They get way to ahead in class and feel they are getting held back by the rest of the kids they go to school with. Based on their grades i can agree with this. They have a very hard time dealing with the other kids because their family is a little different. They get ignored and bullied quite a bit and I know this is typical but their mother, a good friend of mine since a young age, tells me her daughter is not eating now and cries at night and her son doesn't speak almost at all and when he does it is very negative and down bringing. These kids used to be so happy and bright all of the time and I would know because i watched them grow up! Please leave your honest opinion and if you have experience with either of these things (home schooling or online schooling) please let me know in your reply. Thank you so much to every one who answers. The kids and their mother just really need help with this and it is very hard for me to watch them suffer.

The high school aged kids could take a class or two at their local community college as a dual enrollment student. These classes are free in most states. The kids will get both college and high school credits, and not have to deal with any of the lame public high school BS.

I homeschool my three underage kids. My 12th and 11th grade daughters attend community college. My 11th grader also attends American School (her choice). My 7th grade son is homeschooled by me. I don't outsource any of his subjects, I'm his teacher.

Homeschooling does not have a set cost.

You can home school for free using the internet and library, or you can spend several thousand dollars on internet classes, co-op classes, private tutors etc.

I recently read an article that said the average homeschooler spends $500 a year. That sounds about right to me, depending on what you count toward your homschool cost. We probably spend $300 on supplies such as textbooks, work books, computer programs, paper, printer ink etc. Co-op costs $145 a semester. I figure we spend another $300-$400 on field trips but many of those we would sill do even if we weren't homeschooling. In fact we would probably spend more on them if we weren't homeschooling a we normally go during special homeschool events or book it as an educational field trip with one of our homeschool groups.

Homeschooling can cost anywhere from nothing to thousands of dollars each year. It depends on your methods, curriculum, etc… 1st, find out your state's laws regarding homeschooling. There are a TON of websites out there to help.

That depends if you are doing public school or private. Public school is paid for from taxes so there is no additional costs other than school supplies. Private school you would have to pay tuition. Check their enrollment policy regarding refunds if you have already paid something.

For homeschool, you will need to buy your own books. That cost depends what curriculum you will use. Most families spend $500-1000/year. You just need to follow your state homeschooling laws to be sure you are legally homeschooled. That may include withdrawing from and/or notifying your intent to homeschool to your current school.

Can anyone recommend a good homeschool curriculum for Texas? I have a kindergartener and a fourth grader.?

Are you looking for an online program or independent homeschool? I don't know much about online programs since I homeschool independently. I used to use Abeka, since it's used by a lot of Christian schools. However, we found it too dull and repetitive. Now we use Christian Light Education and love it. It's still academically sound, but has a wider variety of activities in the lessons. They reflect conservative Christian (Mennonite) views. There's also less parental prep with Christian Light. My friend uses Sonlight and has great success. It's more literature based than textbooks, especially elementary and middle school levels.

You can purchase single subjects or complete grade kits from each of those companies. They also all offer advising and record keeping services for an additional fee. Christian Light Education is the most affordable, both for curriculum and advising.

There are also companies that specialize in just a single subject such as math, reading, or science. This allows you to pick and choose among companies to custom design a program to fit your needs, interests, and budget. That is what I do, although I mostly use Christian Light. Examples that I've used are Math-U-See, Exploration Education (physics), and Institute for Excellence in Writing. Rainbow Resource is a terrific homeschool supply store for getting books, workbooks, kits, and other materials.

Reviews on Sonlight Christian homeschool curriculum?

Im a sophmore and looking into homeschooling. I've seen plenty of good reviews for this, but i just want to make sure. As a highschooler, would i be able to self teach myself using this? Im not sure if my parents could. Thanks.

If you love to read, yes.

Sonlight used very few text books. Instead Sonlight uses library books, biographies, historical fiction and other books to teach the content area subjects.

I love the books used in Sonlight. You will read many classics in high school. Mom doesn't have to teach. You have options for Math. My preference is Teaching Textbooks. My son went through TT entirely on his own for Algebras, Geometry and Pre-Calculus.

1. I buy curriculum from several different companies based upon my kids needs, interests, and learning style rather than full grade level kits. Companies that I have used include Christian Light Education, Sonlight, Winter Promise, Veritas Press, Math-U-See, Institute for Excellence in Writing, Rainbow Resource, and Exploration Education (physics). Rainbow Resource is an online homeschool book distributor. They have thousands of books and materials on all subjects from many different publishers to choose from. 2. The same as regular school students. Study the subjects most colleges expect from high school graduates and any others that are required by your education laws. You would take the entrance exams and fill out applications. The main difference is that you would create your own transcript instead of a school providing it.

3. I did not like Abeka. My son found the work repetitive and the books dull. We didn't even finish our second year with them.

Home schooling cost?

I need to off about 3 months of school and be home schooled becasue of family/school reasons…my parents cant do it because they work, so i need a tutor and can i just gett all my work from the school and stuff like that..how much do you think this would all cost and will the school except this..i know a girl who did this for medical reasons so i think its possible. And, will colleges be turned off by this ..i need all the info i can get please help me

its for depression and stuff like that can that be3 used as an medical excuse this is the only reason im doing this.

The girl who did it for medial reasons probably was doing home and hospital schooling where, after a doctor sends a note to the school saying that due to a medical reason you are unable to attend school, the school sends a teacher to your house to teach you and bring you work (and this is free). If you don't have a medical reason, chances are, the school won't be willing to do this. Maybe check around in your area to see if there are any schools that only do "homeschooling" where you pick up work and see your teacher once a week. I know in our area we do and it is a public school so doesn't cost anything.

ADDED: I'm not sure if depression counts, but possibly. Maybe have your parents schedule an appointment with your school counselor and you all can discuss what your best option is. You could also talk to your doctor about getting a note for that. Yor doctor might also have some suggestions to help you overcome this depression. Good luck!

It costs what you want it to cost, basically.

You can spend thousands on homeschool programs, classes, brand new pre-packaged curricula, a science lab, etc.

Or you can be frugal, buy used materials, join free local support groups, use the interenet & library for the bulk of your resources, etc.

Pros and Cons of a lifestyle are hard to quantify– one man's pro is another man's con. It's like living in the country vs. Living in the city… For some people, the quiet and space of the country far outweigh the need to drive 20 miles for a gallon of milk; for others, that drive would be unthinkable and they're willing to sacrifice the land & peace for a more centrally located home on a busier street.

It's like that with homeschooling– some love the freedom, the fact that the family spends more time together, the fact that they have more hands-on control of their child's education and can alter it as necessary, that they have a variety of approaches to take and resources to draw from, that they can choose more quality socialization opportunities for their kids to be placed in, etc.

Other people don't want those kinds of responsibilities, or don't have the confidence to take charge.

So what one person likes about it could be something you like, too, or something you hate. You really have to look at it as a complete lifestyle.

Well, the "cons" that Kate listed are mostly fictional, so you can't really go by them.

Cons of Homeschooling #1: The time it takes to homeschool

Homeschooling vs public schooling may be a good idea but do you have the time?

Well, my son is completely done with school – lessons, practice, homework, and projects – before the ps kids get *out* of school – then they still have to do homework and chores. Meanwhile, he's playing catch in the yard with his dad and being involved in things he enjoys.

Cons of Homeschooling #2: Unrealistic expectation of results of homeschooling

My expectations of him are that he learn and achieve according to his abilities. Somehow, I don't think that's terribly "unrealistic".

Cons of Homeschooling #3: Limits on family's connection with other families

Huh? We're with other families all the time. We actually have a lot more time to spend time with others *because* we homeschool. He's not up till 9 or 10 every night (at age 10) doing homework, so he can get together with his friends – during the day, even.

Cons of Homeschooling #4: Cost of homeschooling

We homeschool for around $300 per year. I don't think it'll break us.

Cons of Homeschooling #5: Limit of homeschool teacher

His limit isn't my ability – it's his desire to learn, which is nearly unlimited. Half of his outside instructors have been college instructors (he's entering the 6th grade). I have friends who are professional artists, degreed scientists and mathemeticians, engineers, doctors, and writers, all of whom are happy to work with him when needed. I really don't think he's held back too much by my "limits".

Cons of Homeschooling #6: Lack of recognition

Well, he doesn't need to be on the news or in the newspaper to feel like he's done a good job (though both of those have happened, due to his achievements). He is confident enough in his own abilities to have pride in his own good work. He doesn't need to beat a class full of kids in order to feel good about himself. He works hard because he wants to, not because he thinks he can beat out someone else. (That's a direct quote from him, by the way – he's reading over my shoulder.)

Cons of Homeschooling #7: Lack of competition

Well, between auditioning for plays and playing sports, I think he gets enough competition in…in everything else, he naturally competes against his own expectations, rather than against what others expect of him. (His expectations are generally way higher than others, anyway.)

Cons of Homeschooling #8: Lack of accountability

To whom? He's accountable to himself, to me, and to his dad. He's several years above grade level in nearly every subject. Who else does he need to be accountable to – the state, who would bring him backward 3+ years? Yeah…

Cons of Homeschooling #9: No sports involvement

He plays baseball every year, will likely be starting basketball next year, and has the option to play golf, tennis, competitive swimming, football, gymnastics, martial arts, or whatever else he'd like to do. He picks and chooses his activities according to what he likes and what he feels is worth the time and effort. There are more in our area to choose from than one child could ever do.

As you can see, the above "cons" are not cons…they're stereotypes.

There are actually no proven "cons" to homeschooling as an educational option. The only cons that could exist would apply to individual family situations.

For example, it often does cause a financial change in a family. I previously held down a well-paying, very demanding professional position, which I left in order to homeschool my son. Yes, that changed our financial situation, but I don't consider it a con – we make due. We change our habits and don't spend as much. It's something that's definitely worth it to give my son the education that he needs.

And yes, you will be spending a lot more time with your child…but again, I don't see this as a con. I didn't become a mother so that I could ship my child off to be raised by others all day long. If school was the best place for him, I wouldn't have a problem with him being there, and I'd be as involved as humanly possible. However, it's not – home is. I love getting to spend time with him and be a major influence in his life.

The only other con I can think of – and this is one that all of us deal with – is fending off the ignorant remarks and stereotypes from people who can't imagine anything outside the status quo. It gets annoying, but if that's the worst of it, bring it on

NJ Homeschooling vs. Homebound Instruction?

Can someone tell me what the difference is between being homeschooled & homebound instruction in the state of NJ.

Homeschooling is when the parent withdraws the child, or never enrolls them in public or private school. Instead the parent directs the education of their own children. The parent pays for all materials when homeschooling their children. As a parent I have been homeschooling my children for the past 15 years, in my own home without any intervention from the public school system.

Homebound instruction is directed by the public school, usually when the the student is ill or has other problems when traditional classroom instruction not feasible. The school district sends a teacher employed and paid for by the system. The school covers all cost for homebound instruction. As a certified teacher I have frequently been taken consultant jobs with several different school districts to do homebound instruction for numerous students through the years. The reasons these public school children have been on homebound instruction have included the child was deaf and too young to meet NJs cut off date to enroll in the preschool handicapped program by a matter of days Rather than make the child wait a full year and loose the opportunity to develop language until nearly 4 years old, the district enrolled her in homebound instructions. Other students were severely emotionally disturbed, autistic, and a few had terminal illnesses or were awaiting transplants and could not be exposed to to potential germs in a classroom setting, and one student was recovering from Mono.and was placed on homebound instruction so she didn't fall behind while recovering enough to return to the classroom.

Greater Costs – Home-schooling usually requires the family to absorb the total cost of their childs education, including classroom materials and technology unless provided through charter school provision.

Poor Civic Participation – Learning in a group promotes social learning and values of citizenship. An isolated home-schooled child does not encounter the diverse perspectives needed to develop shared values.

Lost Social Services – Public schools not only educate, but also provide many social services through trained workers. Home-school families lack such expertise and resources.
